"Bedtime Stories"
"UNCLE QUATRE!!!" The blonde turned around, after hanging up his coat, in time to find two small children running toward him. Tears were in their matching blue eyes as they clung to either of their uncle's arms and buried their face into his hips. The twin boys were only seven, but trembled in fear like Quatre had never seen. The Arab pulled free their hold and kneeled to wipe their tears. "It's okay. You'll be fine." "Until tonight!" The slightly taller boy wailed. His name was Sammy, the smaller was Tyler. "Why until then?" Their uncle questioned; wondering if leaving the two boys in Heero's care for the pass two hours had been the best of ideals. "Because, that's when Boogie Man makes his rounds." Tyler cried as Heero entered the room. The annoyed expression on the Japanese man's face was nearly enough to explain why the boys were crying so hard. "Boogie Man?" Quatre's question was intended for Heero to explain, but his nephews intervened. "Heero says that he's Satan's lackey, and that he's a cloaked figure that roams the shadows of night. . ." Sammy started. "And that he looks for little kids that are bad, and he eats a part of their body, even fingers and toes!!" Tyler finished. "I need my fingers uncle Quatre, how am I suppose to count without them?" "Sammy, Tyler, listen to me. There is no such thing as Boogie Man. Heero made it up to scare you." The boys shook their heads 'no'. "Heero showed us scars that Boogie Man gave him." Sammy informed and pointed toward the Japanese man. Quatre didn't have to look to know what scars the boys were talking about. Those scares were acquired on the battlefield; not by a fictional character that Heero made up on a whim. Quatre sighed and stood straight. His anger filled sapphires focused on Heero's gaze. "Heero, tell them that you were just telling a tall tale. . .that you made up the stories." Sammy and Tyler turned to face their storyteller. Though they had been as skeptical as Quatre at first, Heero was the one to truly convince them that Boogie Man existed; and he would be the only one to unconvinced them. Sighing, Heero leaned against the wall and closed his eyes. Naturally, the two boys failed to tell Quatre the reason for their fear of Boogie Man. If they would have confessed to their uncle, Heero would have been more than happy to reveal the truth. However, they were merely overlooking the fact that Boogie went after bad children in the first place. "Heero." Quatre demanded and Heero snickered. "I didn't make him up; he's as real as Santa Clause." Heero stated matter of factly, causing the boys to cry even harder; knowing that they still believed in such a fanciful creation as well. "But I guess you wouldn't know him, would you Quatre. You were always such a good little boy." "Heero!" Feeling that there wasn't any more to say, Heero pushed from the wall and left the room. Quatre looked after his acquaintance in annoyance. Deep down, he knew he should have taken the boys with him to the meeting. He could have had the secretary watch them in the meantime. At least that way, they wouldn't be so terrified over something that didn't exist. It took an entire hour before Quatre could settle his nephews. After they related everything Heero had told them, he fully understood why the children were petrified. Hearing some of the fables was disturbing to Quatre; and he was a grown man. Being only seven and hearing this from an adult really shook up the kids. When he was certain that they were okay, for the moment, Quatre stepped into the next room and called Heero's home phone number. "Heero, pick up. I know you're home. You are so mean! How could you tell these impressionable children such horrid tales? Don't you have an ounce of decency in you? I know, you know that they are terrified. Asia is going to kill me when she finds out what you did to them." Heero leaned back in his chair as he listened to Quatre's voice. Maybe he had gone a little overboard with his retelling of stories, but the kids deserved it. Just because they were children didn't give them the right to act as they had; especially after Heero had explained to them, twice, that they shouldn't. Maybe now, their mother will start paying closer attention to them. Quatre growled angrily over the answering machine and hung up. Heero rested his head against the back of the couch and remembered the first time he had heard the same stories. He had known the entire time that his father had been joking with him about Boogie Man. . .that was because he wasn't a completely normal child; unlike Quatre's nephews. If they held the capacity to believe in someone that did nice things, why couldn't they believe in something just the opposite? At that moment, the front door opened. Heero shifted his head slightly to find Trowa entering. The Latin was slightly surprised to find Heero on the couch like this. Seeing his lover gave Heero an ideal. As it formed in his mind, Trowa walked over to him and straddled him. Their lips met in a brief kiss, and the plan was complete. "Baby, you want to do me a favor?" Trowa's green eyes lit up, despite the grogginess in the depths of them, and Heero knew what he was thinking. "I'm not talking sexually." "Oh. . .what did you have in mind?" "Ever hear of Boogie Man?" "Who?" Hearing this made Heero feel even more strange. He thought for sure that at least one of the mercenaries that Trowa knew in his life would have related the tale. What exactly did that say about him and his father?
"Sam, why are you shinning the light in my face?" "You want Boogie to get you?" Tyler sat up in bed with a massive yawn and he rubbed his eyes. "I'm so tired though." "What's more important? Sleep, or losing your toes?" Tyler's eyes widen in the circle of light that his brother had focused on him. Sighing, Sammy pushed off the blankets and climbed into his brother's bed. "There. . .this way I can keep on eye on you without hurting your eyes." "Sam, do you really think that Boogie is coming to get us?" "After everything we did in the park this afternoon? There isn't a doubt. Besides, did you hear the way Heero was talking about him? I bet they're best friends, and Heero is telling him every detail this minute. He'll probably have Boogie come get us just because we didn't listen to him." "Maybe we should apologize to Heero. . .maybe that'll keep him from coming." Sammy shook his head lightly. "You heard what uncle Quatre said about Heero being the spawn of Satan." "What's a spawn?" "I don't know, but anything dealing with Satan isn't good." Their conversation was cut short as they heard a knocking. All at once, the door opened to reveal Ami, the maid. Her violet eyes soaked in the two boys in worry. "Sammy, Tyler, why are you still awake?" "We were waiting for-ow." Sammy elbowed his brother roughly. "We're getting ready to go to bed. . .that's all. Goodnight." "Well, good night boys." That said, she closed the door and darkness tucked in the twins. "Know what Tyler? I just thought of something." "What?" "Heero said that Boogie creeps through the shadows of night." "Yeah." "Do you see any shadows?" A small pause occurred before Tyler's answer came. "Uh-uh." "Then how will Boogie get in? As long as we keep it pitch black at night, then he won't get us." "That's not what Heero meant." Both boys froze at the new voice. It was a dark voice that neither of them had ever heard. Sammy fumbled with the flash light a quick moment before he turned it on. A cloaked figure stood at the foot of their bed. All that could be seen was a pair of red, glowing eyes. Sammy's jaw dropped at the sight. He tried to scream, but nothing came out. "Are-are you Mr-Mr-Mr. Man?" Tyler stuttered in a weak tone. "So Heero gave you fore warning. . .figures. All well. So who's first, and which will it be? Toes, or fingers?" As the figure reached for them, they wailed in unison. Sammy grabbed the hem of his blanket and threw it over Boogie's head. He then grabbed his brother's wrist and pulled him from the bed. The two boys barreled down the hall, screaming for their uncle. "You think it's funny scaring two elementary boys?" "I didn't do it for fun." "I don't think any reason will justify what you're putting them through. They're afraid to sleep now." "Look, I told them because of the way they were acting." Heero stated in defense. Quatre narrowed his eyes at the Japanese man. "Heero, no behavior, from a child should receive such cruel punishment." "Well, if Santa doesn't persuade them to be good, then Boogie will scare them into it. It'll be fine. Kids like that need to know a little fear every now and then. If they don't, they'll become you." "And what's wrong with me?" "UNCLE QUATRE!!!!!" Quatre's eyes widen in fear as he dashed from the room. He stepped into the main hall just as the two boys descended the stairwell and right into Quatre's waiting arms. They both began talking excitedly in loud tones that made what they were saying incoherent. "Calm down. One at a time. Did you guys have a bad dream?" "It wasn't a dream uncle Quatre!" "Boogie is real, and he wanted to eat our toes!" "He was in our room-" "He had glowing red eyes- "Oh, and nails bigger than mommy's fake ones-" "And sharp teeth-" "He was a hundred feet tall-" Heero stepped from the room shaking his head in pity for the two boys. They were taking turns exaggerating what really happened. "And a scary voice-" "He said that Heero sent him- "He tried to grab us-" "But Sammy threw the blanket over his head and we ran." Tyler finished. Both boys were flustered from the running and explaining. Quatre's eyes ran back to Heero. "See what you're doing?" He asked Heero in an accusing voice. For the first time, the boys noticed Heero's presence. Their eyes lit up and they ran the short distance from their uncle to Heero. "Make him go away Heero!" "We're sorry for the way we acted!" "We promise we won't flip off old ladies-" "Or kick down sand castles that littler kids built-" "We won't flip skirts-" "We'll never call you papa again-" "And tell people that you're mean to us-" "And try to abandon us-" "We're sorry we told the nice cop that you touch us in bad ways-" "And here-" Both boys reached into their pajama tops to pull out sling shots. "We won't shoot any more pigeons. We'll listen to whatever you say for the rest of our lives!!" They concluded in unison. Quatre's eyes widen as he heard this. He pushed to his feet, staring at his nephews in a new light. All this time, he had thought that Heero was being the mean one, when he was merely looking for revenge. . .not that that was any better. "Sammy! Tyler!" The boys jumped as they recognized this tone. "Did you honestly do all of that to Heero?" The boys' eyes dropped to the carpet. Slipping the sling shots into his back pocket, Heero headed upstairs. The last thing he wanted to do was listen to Quatre scolding the two boys over their behavior. He headed straight to the boys' bedroom, where Boogie was sitting on the edge of the bed, waiting. Smiling, Heero closed the door and walked further inside. He grabbed the hood of the cloak and tossed it back; the mask soon followed. He then leaned forward and kissed Trowa deeply. "Thanks baby." He whispered when they parted. "You can thank me in a little while. . .I still can't believe that they told a cop that you molested them." Heero kissed the Latin again, this time, with a quicker brush. Trowa's hand caressed the front of Heero's jeans. "Why don't we go home, and you can molest me all you want?" "One step ahead of you." Heero announced and reached for the mask. "We promise uncle Quatre." Sammy stated with a sniffle. At that moment, Heero and Boogie appeared on the stairs. Tyler hid behind his brother as they approached. Heero stared down at the boys with a firm glare. "We talked things over, and Boogie's going to bite someone else tonight." The boys looked over to Boogie, and he nodded. "But just this once." "Next time you're bad, Heero might not be around." Boogie stated in his dark tone, as he and Heero headed for the door. "You two, be nice." Boogie called back before disappearing behind the door. Sammy and Tyler could only stare in awe at the closing door. Quatre shook his head in grief. Somehow, he should have known that Heero would talk Trowa into dressing up for this. Sometimes, he couldn't help but feel that his best friend was a little too wrapped around Heero's pinkie. But that didn't matter. Maybe this little scenario will convince the boys to behave better. . .if that were the case, then maybe Heero's scare tactics wasn't really the wrong way to go. "Do you know what this means Ty?" Sammy stated suddenly, cutting through Quatre's thoughts. "We better start being good." "That too. . .but we have to make sure we stay
on Heero's good side. If he knows Satan's lackey so well, he may know
Satan himself." Sammy turned to find Tyler's eyes widening at
the thought. "If we upset him worse, next time he might have
Satan come." Quatre's eyes drifted skyward.
